British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.
The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.
British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."
Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
